Artist Interview - Iris Koh

Iris Koh is an accomplished pianist, music director, choral conductor, vocal coach and composer. She has worked extensively with the local and international schools in Singapore with experiences in choral, classroom, piano and voice methodologies.
She graduated from the Elder Conservatorium (University of Adelaide) with a B.Mus majoring in Musicology while also being a pianist at the Elder Conservatorium Wind Ensemble and did extra studies in Music Composition at Flinders Music. She specialized in Choral Conducting and Aural studies during her postgraduate years at the University of Queensland. There she learnt about the philosophies of Zoltan Kodaly and the revolutionary approach to Music Education through solfege and voice. Since returning to Singapore in 1999, Iris has grown as a musician, educator and entrepreneur.

From 2010-2016, Iris spent a large part of her time to learn business management, funding and consultancy working alongside her husband and partner Raymond Ng in Candle Consulting / Get Funding. She believes that this valuable time in learning about business will be very important in the next stage of her career as she builds ChorusArt Pte Ltd to be the leading edutainment company in Singapore, capable of making a mark on the world stage.
ChorusArt Pte Ltd is the concert promoter for the Vienna Boys Choir event in Singapore from 2018.

Songwriters: Are You Still Writing Mostly Ballads?

One of the biggest “ailments” I see when I mentor songwriters is that they are writing WAY too many ballads. It seems like many of us default to slow songs. While a well written ballad can be very successful and meaningful, there are also many reasons it is NOT a great idea to write a lot of ballads if you are chasing that first cut. Here are some of the biggest reasons.

Dilly Del, our favorite boy in Flipside! He is not only a singer or only a rapper! The multi talented artist is also a great songwriter, lyricist and a dancer.
We, at Flipside, want to use this interview publishing as a reason to tell him "Happy belated birthday, Mr Del!".

Dilly's debut album named "Colors", written by himself and co-produced with Hangi Tavakoli will be released at end of this year which we will keep the updates on Flipside's website as well as all social media platforms.

As creative people, we tend to be self-doubters. It’s what drives us to look inward, to constantly question life around us, and, if channelled properly, will drive us to write great songs. It’s perfectly natural to struggle with believing in ourselves and our art, but ultimately, we must trust ourselves and believe our journey is our destiny.

Artist Interview - Aaron Xiang Hua

Aaron Xiang Hua as an already established name in the dance industry, has been a choreographer and professional dancer for more than 2 decades but for past few years he had added being a singer-songwriter to his professional career.
He is currently working closely with Flipside Productions' music director Hangi Tavakoli, and the two are preparing Aaron's second studio album to be released by end of this year.

In one article previously, we covered a topic about “Speed-Songwriting”. But these three songwriting exercises from this topic are kind of different and they are designed to get you into the flow of writing without thinking.
Your best ideas come from the subconscious, and you can tap into this with regular practice. Remember to do these exercises quickly, spending three minutes on each in rapid fire succession. I set the timer on my handphone. Don’t judge or question ANYTHING you write down. This isn’t a test! The sole purpose is to train your creative thinking to respond on command. For me, personally, I found it more helpful to write with pen and paper, instead of typing. A lot of studies show that your brain responds differently when writing, as opposed to typing.
